US targets 2 Russian spies for meddling in local US election.
US Imposes Sanctions on Russian Intelligence Officers for Election Interference
The United States has taken a strong stance against Russian interference in local American elections. In a move to counter Moscow’s “global malign influence operations,” the Treasury Department announced on Friday that it has imposed sanctions on two Russian intelligence officers.
The officers, Yegor Sergeyevich Popov and Aleksei Borisovich Sukhodolov, are members of Russia’s Federal Security Service. They have been actively involved in undermining democratic processes not only in the United States but also in other countries. Their actions have been facilitated through a network of co-conspirators, according to the department’s statement.
The Treasury Department also revealed that both officers have collaborated with Aleksandr Viktorovich Ionov, a Russian individual who was charged by the U.S. Justice Department last year for conducting a multitude of illicit activities.
