US attempts to contact North Korea regarding soldier prove fruitless.
The United States Reaches Out to North Korean Military Regarding American Service Member
The United States has made efforts to establish contact with the North Korean military through various channels regarding the recent incident involving an American service member. Pvt. Travis King, a cavalry scout with the Army, had completed his prison sentence and was scheduled to return home to the U.S. However, he made the decision to cross into North Korea instead.
Collaboration and Communication
The White House, in collaboration with the Department of Defense, the Department of State, the United Nations, and partners from Sweden and South Korea, is actively working to determine Pvt. King’s whereabouts and ensure his well-being. White House deputy press secretary Olivia Dalton stated that multiple channels have been utilized to reach out to the Korean People’s Army in order to gather information and find a resolution.
Seeking Answers
Several U.S. agencies are dedicated to gathering details about Pvt. King’s situation, but at this point, there are more questions than answers. It remains uncertain whether the U.S. will be able to secure Pvt. King’s release and if he even desires to return to the U.S., considering he voluntarily crossed into North Korea.
According to South Korean media, Pvt. King was accused of assaulting police officers by kicking a patrol car door and using offensive language.
Concern for Well-being
State Department spokesman Matthew Miller revealed that the Department of Defense’s attempts to establish contact with North Korea have not yet received a response. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed his concern for Pvt. King’s well-being and emphasized that his crossing into North Korea was unauthorized and voluntary.
As the situation unfolds, the United States remains committed to resolving the matter and ensuring the safety of Pvt. King.
