Utah gets new state flag

After a five-year journey, Utah has officially adopted a new state flag featuring a large yellow beehive at its center. Governor Spencer Cox signed a bill on Tuesday afternoon that authorized the new state flag while designating the old flag as a “historic state flag” through an executive order. The new state flag is symbolic of Utah’s “industry” and its motto.

The replaced flag was the original design adopted in 1911, created by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The new flag contains the same shade of blue as the original, showing respect for its heritage. The revamp of the flag began in 2019, and officials chose a pennant from more than 5,700 samples submitted by the public.

In response to opposition, the executive order not only requires the display of the historic version of the flag above the Utah Capitol, but also requires all state agencies to display the historic version during holidays. Governor Cox also called for an additional amendment requiring the historic version to be flown above the modern one whenever flying them together.

Senator Dan McCay, the original sponsor of the flag, said that he’s making plans to implement the changes requested by the governor. He expressed gratitude that the current flag will maintain an important role in the future of Utah while being excited about the people’s participation in the design of the new flag, hoping it will serve the Beehive state for years to come.
