Utah Man Who Killed Family Was Investigated by Child Agency
SALT LAKE CITY—Child protective services had opened an investigation of a Utah man over alleged child abuse and threats to his family just weeks before he killed seven of his family members and then himself, new documents reveal.
Two weeks prior to Michael Haight’s murder, Michael Haight shot Michael Haight, his wife and five children, and then killed himself. The Deseret News obtained case documents from the Utah Division of Child and Family Services, which were obtained through a public record request.
An investigation was opened by the agency 11 days prior to the incident. It focused on the abuse that the oldest child of the couple had suffered in the past.
Just days prior to Haight’s visit, Haight was accused in another alleged incident of abuse. He is accused of throwing his 7 year-old son on the floor after getting upset. Tausha Haight was his wife and stated to a caseworker she was worried about her husband’s tone. “how he looks when he is angry,” This is what the report said.
Caseworkers were asked not to interview her husband before she filed for divorcement, Dec. 21. The woman told the caseworkers her husband threatened to kill himself or take his own life. “make her life hell” If she leaves, h
