Utah’s special election outcome warns Mitt Romney for 2024.
A Pro-Trump Candidate Wins Utah Special Election
In a highly contested three-way Republican primary, a pro-Trump candidate emerged victorious in a special election held on Tuesday to fill a soon-to-be vacant congressional seat in Utah.
Celeste Maloy, a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump, secured 38 percent of the vote in the race for Utah’s 2nd Congressional District, defeating former state Rep. Becky Edwards who received 35 percent of the vote, and businessman Bruce Hough who garnered 26 percent.
The primary was held to determine the GOP candidate who will succeed Rep. Chris Stewart, who is resigning later this month to care for his ailing wife.
Contrasting Views on Trump
While all three candidates campaigned on traditional Republican values of small government and pro-business agendas, Edwards stood out as a vocal critic of Trump. On the other hand, Maloy and Hough strongly condemned the recent indictments against the former president, viewing them as politically motivated.
However, Edwards’ support for Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential race proved to be a significant setback for her campaign.
Challenges for Sen. Mitt Romney
The results of the special election serve as a wake-up call for Sen. Mitt Romney, whose anti-Trump stance has put him at odds with many Utah Republicans. Romney, who has faced criticism for working with Democrats and voting to convict Trump in both impeachment trials, is up for re-election in 2024.
Several Utah Republicans, including state House Speaker Brad Wilson and Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs, have announced their intention to challenge Romney in the upcoming GOP primary race or are considering doing so.
Romney’s Future Plans
Romney has not yet announced whether he plans to run for re-election. However, he has stated that he will reveal his decision by the end of the year, according to the Deseret News.
Last month, Romney expressed his belief that Trump will win the GOP primary race in 2024, further highlighting the divide between him and many Utah Republicans.
It remains to be seen how Romney’s political future will unfold, but the Utah special election results have certainly put him on notice.
Will Romney lose the election in 2024?
“I think [Trump will] be the Republican nominee, President [Joe] Biden will be the Democratic nominee, and a lot of people in America are going to scratch their heads and say, ‘Why can’t we do better than this? I don’t want either one of them,’” Romney said, according to the Deseret News. “I’m one of those, but that’s probably what’s going to happen.”
This wishy-washy statement perfectly encapsulates Romney, who lives up to his moniker “Milquetoast Mitt.”
