Van Jones believes that Democrats are extremely fearful and that Joe Biden, whom he refers to as “Grandpa,” is facing significant challenges.
CNN Commentator Van Jones: Democrats ”Scared” to Address Biden’s Poll Numbers and Reelection Troubles
CNN commentator Van Jones boldly stated on Thursday that Democrats are avoiding discussions about President Joe Biden‘s declining poll numbers and the real challenges he faces in his reelection campaign.
Biden, at 80 years old, holds the record for being the oldest person ever elected to the White House. Unfortunately, his presidency has been marred by various crises, including a botched withdrawal from Afghanistan, a surge in illegal immigration, and skyrocketing inflation. Concerns about Biden’s age have also been raised, particularly by Republicans running in the 2024 primary.
Despite these issues, Democrats have been hesitant to address concerns about Biden’s viability as a candidate, as he is expected to run for reelection in 2024. However, Jones, a Democrat himself, believes that this reluctance may harm Democrats’ chances in the upcoming elections.
“A lot of people are terrified that Joe Biden is in real trouble and that you can’t talk about it,” Jones said. “Today, I think a lot of Democrats look at these [poll] numbers and say, the whispers are finally showing up in this data. People are talking behind their hand. They worry about Joe Biden.”
Jones further compared Biden to a beloved grandpa, acknowledging his merits but questioning whether he should be entrusted with a high-stress job for another six years. He emphasized the importance of having an open conversation about this topic, especially considering the current state of the economy.
“But I think it’s important for us to have this conversation now. I think this may be the bottom for Joe Biden. He may go up as the economy improves. But right now the economy is getting better and fears about the economy are getting worse,” Jones said.
A recent poll published by The Wall Street Journal revealed that 73% of voters, including two-thirds of Democrats, believe Biden is too old to run for president again. This concerning result follows an Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll that found 77% of voters, including 69% of Democrats, share the same sentiment.
Despite these numbers, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre dismissed concerns about Biden’s age, denying claims that he is treated like a “toddler” by staff. Jean-Pierre emphasized Biden’s wisdom, experience, and historic achievements as reasons to support him.
