Vegan Sam Bankman-Fried sustains on bread and water before trial, lawyers say.
Sam Bankman-Fried’s Culinary Complaints and Legal Battles
Sam Bankman-Fried, the co-founder of the collapsed cryptocurrency exchange FTX, is making headlines once again. This time, it’s not about his alleged financial wrongdoings, but rather his dissatisfaction with the food options at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Lawyers for the 31-year-old, who is facing eight federal charges including wire fraud, complained Tuesday that he is not getting the vegan dishes he wants behind bars and has had to live off bread, water, and peanut butter.
Magistrate Judge Sarah Netburn acknowledged the concern and promised to investigate the availability of vegan options at the notorious prison. However, Bankman-Fried’s grievances don’t stop at his dietary preferences.
Obstacles to Trial Preparation
Bankman-Fried’s legal team argued that his ability to prepare for his upcoming trial on October 3rd is hindered by the lack of access to computers at the detention center. They also emphasized the need for medication to help him focus and a more balanced meal.
While Bankman-Fried has pleaded not guilty to the charges, prosecutors allege that he siphoned billions of dollars from FTX customer deposits for personal use and illegal activities. They claim he even attempted to influence witnesses and provide case-related documents to reporters from The New York Times.
Bankman-Fried’s Legal Rollercoaster
Initially granted house arrest, Bankman-Fried’s $250 million bail was revoked on August 11th due to accusations of witness tampering. Judge Lewis Kaplan expressed his frustration, stating, “He has gone up to the line over and over again, and I am going to revoke bail.”
As the legal battle continues, Bankman-Fried’s complaints about prison food and access to resources add another layer of complexity to an already high-profile case.
