Vehicle plummets into Potomac after Arlington Memorial Bridge crash

A crash caused a vehicle to veer off the Arlington Memorial Bridge in Washington, D.C., entering the icy water of the Potomac River.

The crash occurred just before 7 p.m. on Thursday. The bridge was closed for a crash investigation, according to U.S. Park Police; the driver of the submerged vehicle was brought to shore and received advanced life support on the way to a nearby hospital.

Rescue personnel used boats and divers to reach the person in the water. However, due to the snow and darkness, authorities said they left the vehicle in the river and would return on Friday to try and extricate it.

District of Columbia Fire and EMS later posted on social media that the second vehicle involved in the accident stayed on the bridge and both occupants suffered minor injuries. One of them was brought to a nearby hospital.

U.S. Park Police is leading a criminal investigation into the crash, per WTOP.
