‘Very Complicated’: Dr. Rachel Levine Dodges Sen. Paul’s Issue About Sex Adjustments For Children

Dr. Rachel Levine evaded queries from Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) on Thurs regarding Levine’s assistance for giving kids puberty blockers and sex-alter surgeries.

Levine, who’s President Joe Biden’s nominee for assistant Health insurance and Human Services (HHS) secretary, fielded questions from various lawmakers throughout a confirmation hearing, but Paul asked especially blunt, pointed, and graphic questions.

“Genital mutilation has been nearly universally condemned,” Paul began, citing the planet Health Organization (WHO), the US Children’s Fund, the US Population Fund. “Based on the WHO, genital mutilation is recognized internationally as a violation of human rights. Genital mutilation is known as particularly egregious because, because the WHO notes, it really is nearly always completed on minors and is really a violation of the rights of children.”

Paul, who received his M.D. from Duke University School of Medicine in 1988, continued to note that a lot of genital mutilation worldwide isn’t typically performed by force but instead with regard to “social convention, social norm, the social pressure to conform; to accomplish what others do and also have been doing, aswell the necessity to be accepted socially and worries to be rejected by the city.”

Paul warned that American culture is along the way of socially normalizing sex changes for minors, either through puberty-blocking hormones or surgery.

“Dr. Levine, you have supported both allowing minors to get hormone blockers to avoid them from going right through puberty, in addition to surgical destruction of a minor’s genitalia,” Paul grilled, noting the permanent ramifications of such measures. He cited a statistic from the American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds) that “80 to 95 percent of pre-pubertal children with gender dysphoria will experience resolution by late adolescence or even subjected to medical intervention and social affirmation.”

Levine, who’s transgender, dodged Paul’s question whether minors can handle making the decision as life-altering as changing one’s sex.

“Well, senator, many thanks for your fascination with this question,” Levine said. “Transgender medicine is really a highly complex and nuanced field with robust research and standards of care which have been developed. And if I’m luckily enough to be confirmed because the assistant secretary of health, I’ll look forward to dealing with you as well as your office and arriving at your workplace and discussing the particulars of the standards of look after transgender medicine.”

Paul noted Levine didn’t answer his question. “Let’s be considered a little more specific because you evaded the question. Can you support the federal government intervening to override the parents’ consent to provide a kid puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and/or amputation surgery of breasts and genitalia?”

Citing Levine’s support for “accelerating” such measures for “street kids,” Paul expressed his alarm that vulnerable children without homes or families will be permitted to have a sex change. He also gave the exemplory case of Keira Bell, a lady British citizen who later regretted taking testosterone and undergoing a double mastectomy.

Levine again refused to answer Paul’s question, reiterating exactly the same response directed at Paul’s previous question.

“Ignore it in to the record that the witness refused to answer fully the question,” Paul said. “The question is really a very specific one: should minors be making these momentous decisions?” He continued to describe why such procedures are medically unprecedented.

Paul faced a backlash from his colleagues for his type of questioning. “It really is critical to me our nominees be treated with respect and our questions concentrate on their qualifications, instead of ideological and harmful misrepresentations,” said Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA).

In accordance with The Daily Beast , Ruben Gonzales, executive director of the LGBTQ Victory Institute, said in a statement: “His remarks echo the talking points of exactly the same organizations who said gay men deserved AIDS and that LGBTQ people ought to be criminalized.
