Veterans group bets big on Spanberger in Virginia governor’s race – Washington Examiner
A veterans group, VoteVets, has pledged a meaningful $500,000 donation to support former Democratic Representative Abigail Spanberger in her campaign for the Virginia governorship. this marks the group’s largest political contribution to date. Spanberger, who decided not to seek re-election for her House seat, is currently seen as the front-runner for the Democratic nomination, facing potential competition from figures such as Congressman Bobby Scott. She is expected to compete against Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome earle-Sears in the general election.Spanberger, known for her centrist views and previous congressional success, holds a strong financial advantage with $6.5 million in campaign funds, considerably more than Earle-Sears’ $2.1 million. The primary election is scheduled for June 17, 2025, and securing veteran support will be crucial for Spanberger’s bid to win the state for Democrats.
Veterans group bets big on Spanberger in Virginia governor’s race
Former Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger received a $500,000 cash infusion from a liberal veterans group as she pursues the Virginia governorship this year.
The group, VoteVets, is using its largest political donation ever to support a former CIA officer in Spanberger. She declined to run for reelection in the House, opting for a gubernatorial bid.
Spanberger is considered the favorite to win the Democratic nomination this year and is likely to face Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears.
“We know that investing in candidates like Abigail is key to Democrats’ success,” VoteVets said in a memo sent to the New York Times. They also noted Virginia’s large veteran population: 600,000 veterans and 120,000 active-duty service members live in the state.
Veteran support will be critical for Spanberger to flip the state for Democrats in 2025.
But she may still face opposition from within her own party. Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA) has been floated as a challenger and has not ruled out a run, though said President Donald Trump is “keeping me too busy in Washington right now.”
In any case, Spanberger could be a formidable opponent. She has a $6.5 million war chest and flipped a Republican-held congressional seat in 2018.
Earle-Sears has about a third of Spanberger’s war chest at $2.1 million but will have the support of Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA).
Spanberger is a centrist Democrat who was critical of former President Joe Biden. She pressed him in 2021 to be a more “normal” alternative to Trump after he was elected. “Nobody elected him to be FDR, they elected him to be normal and stop the chaos,” she said.
The Democratic primary for Virginia’s gubernatorial race will be held on June 17.
