VP Harris ties record for most tiebreaking votes in Senate.
Vice President Kamala Harris Makes History with Tie-Breaking Vote
On July 12, Vice President Kamala Harris achieved a remarkable feat, tying the record for the most tie-breaking votes in the Senate.
In an interview with The Epoch Times, Ms. Harris expressed her gratitude to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for reminding her of this significant day.
This historic vote brought Ms. Harris’s total tie-breaking votes to 31, a record previously held by John C. Calhoun, who served as vice president from 1825 to 1832.
The tie-breaking vote occurred during the nomination of employment lawyer Kalpana Kotagal to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). While all Democrats supported the nomination, Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) voted against it. With the vote tied at 50-50, Ms. Harris’s decisive vote was necessary to break the tie in the Senate, where Democrats hold a slim majority of 51-49.
The Epoch Times has reached out to Senator Manchin’s office to inquire about his reasons for voting against the nomination.
With Ms. Kotagal’s confirmation, the Democrats now have a 3-2 majority on the EEOC, an agency dedicated to combating employment discrimination. The commission currently consists of two Democrat and two Republican commissioners. Ms. Kotagal, a Democrat, fills the seat left vacant by Republican Janet Dhillon, whose term ended last year.
Senate Majority Leader Schumer celebrated Vice President Harris’s historic achievement, stating, “This is a history-making moment for the United States Senate. Today, Vice President Kamala Harris matches the record for the most tie-breaking votes ever cast in the United States by a vice president.”
