Victoria Spartz not committed to vote Mike Johnson as speaker over Trump’s agenda
Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-IN) said Mike Johnson (R-LA) has yet to earn her vote for House speaker because he is “not able to govern.”
A possible defection from Spartz comes as the Republican Party has a scant one-vote majority in the House. The new Congress will have its first day of session on Jan. 3, 2025, when a speaker election is also anticipated. A speaker will be needed to certify the 2024 election results on Jan. 6 ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20.
“Speaker Johnson is not able to govern and is not actually willing to commit to do his constitutional duty. I’m not asking him to do anything beyond what the Constitution asks,” Spartz said Monday on Fox News’s Fox & Friends. “We have Titanic on the crash course with the iceberg. And our country fiscally is going to have a disaster. This is the fault of Congress. This is constitutional duty, if he’s not willing to do it, then he’s not willing to be a speaker.”
Spartz did not name any replacements for Johnson that she would support. She suggested that any American could be House speaker, alluding to the swirling rumors that Tesla CEO Elon Musk could be voted into the position.
Johnson’s speakership follows a chaotic and brief one from Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted after less than ten months last year.
