Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Is Back. Lizzo Isn’t Convinced.

“But if brands start doing this only because they’ve received backlash then what happens when the ‘trends’ change again? Do the CEOs of these companies value true inclusivity? Or do they just value money?” The “Truth Hurts” singer continued.

Lizzo was responding after Victoria’s Secret announced its plan to bring back an a “new version” One of their most popular runway fashion shows. It began in 1995, but was taken off-line in 2019.
“We’re going to continue to lean into the marketing spend to invest in the business, both at top-of-funnel and also to support the new version of our fashion show, which is to come later this year,” Chief Financial Officer Timothy Johnson revealed During Friday’s 2022 earnings conference call.
Although details about the new runway show have not been made public, it is clear that the brand has adopted a wide range of models in recent years.
“Fashion is a business of change. We must evolve and change to grow,” Leslie Wexner, CEO of Fashion Week announced in 2019 that the show would be ending. “With that in mind, we have decided to rethink the traditional Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.”

Victoria’s Secret’s campaigns have featured many models since that time, including Megan Rapinoe (LGBT activist and soccer player), and Valentina Sampaio (transgender Brazilian model). Many of the new campaigns feature multiple models who are plus-sized.
Lizzo has also been a leader in the body positivity movement and body acceptance. The Detroit-born singer, who is plus-sized, said that she does not consider a person’s weight to be a personal issue.
“I’m working out to have my ideal body type and you know what type it is? None of your f***ing business because I am beautiful, I am strong, I do my job, and I stay on my job,” The singer asserted in 2020.
“So next time you want to come to somebody and judge them whether they drink kale smoothies or eat McDonald’s, or work out or not work out, how about you look at your own f***ing self and worry about your own g** damn body because health is not just determined on what you look like on the outside,” Elle continued.
“Health is also what happens on the inside and a lot of ya’ll need to do a f***ing cleanse for your insides,” Lizzo spoke at the time.
