Yevgeny Prigozhin Downplays Threats to His Life in Video Before Tragic Plane Crash
The founder of Russia’s Wagner paramilitary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, was captured on video just days before his untimely death in a plane crash, dismissing any supposed threats against him. The video, posted by a Wagner-affiliated group on Telegram, shows Prigozhin confidently addressing rumors about his well-being.
“For those discussing whether I am alive or not, how am I doing … It is the weekend now, the second half of August of the year 2023, I’m in Africa. Therefore, to all lovers of discussing my liquidation, intimate life, earnings, anything else — everything is fine,”
The authenticity and location of the video have not been verified by The Washington Examiner. However, Prigozhin’s mention of the weekend suggests it may have been filmed on August 19 or 20. Another video, filmed a few days later, reportedly shows him wearing the same military attire in a similar desert setting.
Prigozhin’s Controversial Actions and Tragic End
About two months prior to his death, Prigozhin led a brief revolt against Moscow, aiming to remove Russian defense leaders whom he accused of misconduct. Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko claimed to have mediated an agreement to prevent a major confrontation just one day after the revolt began. Prigozhin’s forces had been heavily involved in the battle for Bakhmut in Ukraine, enduring significant casualties. However, they have since withdrawn from the frontlines.
Wagner has a long history of operating in various African nations, offering security and weapons in exchange for access to valuable resources. The group’s activities have raised concerns and attracted attention.
While the Kremlin denies any involvement in the plane crash, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has acknowledged the possibility of it being “a deliberate atrocity.”
As investigations continue, the circumstances surrounding Yevgeny Prigozhin’s death remain shrouded in mystery.
