Violence erupts in West Bank after Gaza ceasefire, leaving at least 10 dead
As the world celebrates the fragile ceasefire halting the war in Gaza, a new round of violence broke out in the West Bank, leaving dozens of casualties.
Israeli military officials announced a “counterterrorism operation” across the West Bank, focused on the city of Jenin, beginning Tuesday and extending into Wednesday. According to the Ramallah-based Palestinian Health Ministry, 10 were killed in the raid and 40 wounded, with another 25 arrested. Separate from the raid, Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian locals, set fire to properties, and attacked Israeli security forces. At least 21 were injured, according to the Palestinian prime minister’s office.
In a statement announcing the operation, Israeli military officials said it was continuing through Wednesday.
“Over the past day, the Israeli security forces have hit over 10 terrorists,” the statement reads. “Additionally, aerial strikes on terror infrastructure sites were conducted and numerous explosives planted on the routes by the terrorists were dismantled.”
The Israeli military released footage of the operation.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the operation, code-named “Operation Iron Wall,” would be “extensive and significant.”
Locals, including Muhammad al-Masri, speaking with the New York Times, said Israeli security forces forced certain blocks to evacuate while they made arrests. An Israeli military spokesman said there were no evacuation orders.
The raid involved armored bulldozers, personnel carriers, and other military vehicles, which were seen destroying roads in the camp.
While the main raid was targeting Palestinian militants, Israeli security forces also had to deploy forces to combat violence from Israeli settlers.
“The inquiry indicates that [Monday] night, dozens of Israeli civilians, some of whom were masked, arrived at the area of Al Funduq, instigated riots, set property on fire, and caused damage,” an Israeli military statement reads.
“Upon receiving the reports, IDF and Israeli Police Forces were dispatched to the scene,” it continues. “The civilians hurled rocks and attacked security forces.”
Jenin, one of the poorest areas in the West Bank, has long served as the bastion of Palestinian militant groups. Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad have experienced a flood of recruits in recent years, with many disillusioned with the leadership of the Fatah-controlled Palestinian Authority.
While the more destructive war in Gaza has consumed global headlines, the West Bank has concurrently dealt with its worst violence since the Second Intifada. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, 847 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since Oct. 7, 2023. At least 29 Israelis have been killed over the same period.
Tuesday’s raid is only the latest of several major Israeli raids to target the region. In October 2024, the Israeli Air Force killed a Hamas commander in the West Bank in a large airstrike by a fixed-wing aircraft, the first since the Second Intifada ended in 2005.
