Virginia legislative session delayed by water problems in Richmond – Washington Examiner

Virginia legislative session delayed by water problems in Richmond

Virginia‘s legislative session will begin on Wednesday but will immediately gavel out for the day until next week because of water problems in Richmond.

Richmond was placed under a boil advisory on Monday after a significant winter storm caused a power outage at the city’s water treatment plant. Some additional malfunctions have slowed the restoration of water and the proper filtration of the water, but officials said on Wednesday that progress is being made. Democratic Virginia House Speaker Don Scott announced Tuesday that the chamber would quickly recess at noon Wednesday due to the water problems in Richmond.

“Due to ongoing water outages in the City of Richmond, the House of Delegates will convene tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. to officially gavel in and commence the 2025 legislative session. Following this initial meeting, the House will recess and reconvene on Monday, January 13th, to continue our work for the people of Virginia,” Scott said in a statement on Tuesday.

“We are actively coordinating with local and statewide officials to support Richmond’s efforts to resolve the issue and restore water service to residents as quickly as possible,” Scott added.

The city said that progress being made will allow more water to flow but that “when water returns to the taps, the boil water advisory is in place” and that residents should “use as little water as possible to allow restoration to the entire service area.”

This year, voters in the state will elect a new governor, along with contests for the state House and other statewide elected offices, in November.

Democrats have narrow majorities in both chambers of the state legislature but hold the governor’s mansion. The legislature is expected to begin much of its work on Monday.
