Virginia’s biggest school district refuses to adopt the governor’s new guidelines for transgender students.
Fairfax County Public Schools Rejects New Guidance on Transgender Students
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), the largest school district in Virginia, has made a bold decision. It will not adopt Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s new guidance on transgender students in K–12 schools, according to an announcement made by Superintendent Michelle Reid.
In a message to parents and children at FCPS, Superintendent Reid stated that the district had conducted a “detailed legal review” and concluded that their current policies are in line with federal and state anti-discrimination laws. This decision comes after the Virginia Department of Education, under Gov. Youngkin’s guidance, introduced new model policies for public schools in the state.
The new model policies introduced by Gov. Youngkin’s administration address the treatment of transgender students in public schools. They allow teachers to use pronouns based on a child’s biological sex, require students to use bathrooms corresponding to their sex assigned at birth, and prioritize parental rights in decision-making.
However, FCPS has decided to maintain its existing policies. Superintendent Reid emphasized that “gender expansive and transgender students” will be respected and supported. They will be addressed by their chosen names and pronouns, have access to facilities consistent with their gender identity, and have their privacy protected.
Virginia’s Updated Policies
The updated policies from the Virginia Department of Education state that efforts should be made to inform teachers of a student’s chosen name and pronouns. They also affirm that transgender students should have access to locker rooms and restrooms corresponding to their gender identity.
Superintendent Reid reassured the community that FCPS remains committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all students and staff. The district believes in supporting students and working with parents and caregivers simultaneously.
The new policies also emphasize the availability of single-user bathrooms and the right of parents to opt their child out of using sex-segregated facilities if required by law. Eligible students have the same right to opt out.
‘Parents Are the Appropriate Decision-Makers’
The Virginia Department of Education introduced these policies to restore parental rights in decision-making while ensuring the safety and dignity of all students. Secretary of Education Aimee Guidera emphasized the importance of creating a safe and vibrant learning environment for every student.
