Vivek Ramaswamy vows to dismantle the Department of Education.
Presidential Candidate Vivek Ramaswamy Vows to Take Down the Administrative State
PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania — In a passionate address to the Moms for Liberty summit, Vivek Ramaswamy, a candidate for the presidency, captivated the audience with his bold plan to dismantle the administrative state. He declared that he would start by targeting the “head of the snake” — the Department of Education.
“I will not just reform the administrative state; that’s a false promise,” Ramaswamy proclaimed to a room filled with mothers from 40 states. “We will shut it down, beginning with agencies that should not exist, like the U.S. Department of Education. We will shut it down.”
Revolutionizing the Presidency
Ramaswamy, a 37-year-old Ohio businessman, used his speech at the summit to outline his vision for the presidency and gain support within the Republican field. Following his address, he participated in a panel discussion with Moms for Liberty co-founder Tiffany Justice, joined by his wife, Apoorva, and their two young sons.
During his speech, Ramaswamy provided a detailed plan for shutting down the Department of Education, an agency that Republicans have long sought to eliminate. He emphasized that the main obstacle to achieving this goal is the civil service protections provided to agency employees.
However, Ramaswamy pointed out that the 1977 Presidential Reorganization Act grants the president the authority to shut down the department if it would promote the economy. He firmly stated, “I believe that saving $80 billion for taxpayers is a clear promotion of the economy, and I will act on that authority to shut it down.”
Investing in School Choice
Ramaswamy proposed redirecting the saved funds towards underfunded school choice programs across the country. He also emphasized that states wishing to receive this money would need to ensure that teacher contracts prohibit joining teachers unions, fostering true competition and choice between public and private schools.
Furthermore, Ramaswamy examined how local school districts allocate their funds, highlighting the stark contrast between high per-student expenditures and poor educational outcomes. For instance, he revealed that Chicago spends an average of $40,000 per student, while charter schools in the area achieve double the educational achievement with only half the funding.
A Vision for America
Ramaswamy’s education proposals are part of his broader vision for a family-oriented culture. He stressed the importance of countering the Left’s social advances by offering a conservative alternative that focuses on the individual, the family, the nation, and yes, God.
He passionately declared, “God is real, there are two genders, fossil fuels are essential for human prosperity, an open border is not a border, reverse racism is racism, parents have the right to determine their children’s education, the nuclear family is the best form of governance, capitalism is the most effective system to lift people out of poverty, there are three branches of government, not four, and the U.S. Constitution is the strongest protector of freedom in human history. That is the truth.”
Other notable presidential candidates, including former President Donald Trump, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, also spoke at the summit.
