(Reuters) – In a remarkable feat, artificial intelligence (AI) startup ElevenLabs has reached unicorn status following its latest round of fundraising. With the growing fascination for generative AI technology, startup valuations have skyrocketed, attracting surging investor interest.
On Monday, ElevenLabs announced that it successfully raised $80 million in Series B funding. The investment was led by venture capitalist Andreessen Horowitz, with participation from entrepreneurs Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross, as well as Sequoia Capital and other investors.
Although the two-year-old company did not disclose its valuation, insiders revealed that the funding round valued ElevenLabs at an impressive $1.1 billion, solidifying its status as a unicorn – a billion-dollar startup.
This valuation represents a significant leap from its previous funding round in 2023, where it was valued at $100 million, according to data from PitchBook. This surge in valuation reflects the high expectations for the widespread adoption of AI voice generation technology by various industries, including gaming giants and movie studios.
Headquartered in London, ElevenLabs specializes in developing AI models and tools for creating AI-generated voices with diverse languages, accents, and emotions. The company currently employs approximately 40 remote workers worldwide and plans to expand its workforce to 100 by the end of the year, as revealed by its CEO, Mati Staniszewski, in an interview with Reuters.
When asked about the valuation, Staniszewski declined to comment.
The customer base of ElevenLabs includes individual content creators, as well as notable enterprises such as Storytel (STORYb.ST), Paradox Interactive (PDXI.ST), and The Washington Post.
Staniszewski also highlighted the use of ElevenLabs by political campaign staff in the United States to reach voters who speak foreign languages.
“We’ll witness a surge in AI content across social media campaigns. The key is to ensure that people are aware when they encounter AI-generated content. We strongly advocate for the ability to detect AI content and trace its origin,” said Staniszewski.
Among ElevenLabs’ tools is the AI Speech Classifier, which aids in identifying AI-generated audio content. The company also offers products focused on dubbing for movies and is currently developing a marketplace that allows users to generate AI voices and earn money through licensing.
ElevenLabs faces competition from other AI companies, including OpenAI, whose ChatGPT has gained popularity in the field of generative AI. The Microsoft-backed startup released its own text-to-speech products last year.
“I believe the biggest differentiating factor is our focus on building both the research and the workflow layer. This sets us apart,” added Staniszewski.

Despite the fierce competition, ElevenLabs has managed to carve out a niche for itself with its focus on voice generation technology. The ability to create AI-generated voices that sound natural and diverse is a highly sought-after skill in industries such as gaming, entertainment, and media.
As the demand for AI-generated content continues to grow, ElevenLabs is well-positioned to capitalize on this trend. With its recent funding round, the company plans to further enhance its existing products and develop new offerings to meet the evolving needs of its customers.
