Walmart announced the closure of four stores in Chicago on the same day that the Democrats announced their plans to host their 2024 convention in the city, citing soaring losses as the reason for the move.

A statement from Walmart, published on Tuesday, said: “Collectively our Chicago stores have not been profitable since we opened the first one nearly 17 years ago. These stores lose tens of millions of dollars a year.”

Walmart added that the losses have “nearly doubled in just the last five years.” Other companies such as Tyson Foods, Boeing, Citadel, and Caterpillar are also leaving or in the process of moving due to soaring crime in the city.

The homicide rate in the city has increased by nearly 40 percent since 2019, with more than 800 murders occurring in Chicago in 2021—the most in a quarter-century. The crime wave is driving companies and jobs out of the city.

The Democrats cited Chicago’s pro-choice policies and unions as significant reasons for choosing the city to host the 2024 Democratic National Convention next year, which will take place between August 19 and 22 at the McCormick Place Convention Center and the United Center. At least 5,000 delegates and alternates will attend the event.

However, Chicago’s crime rate has surged under the district attorney Kim Foxx, who has been accused of letting violent criminals off easy. Foxx refused to file charges against a felon who killed one person and wounded another in a shootout in January. The Legal Defense Fund found that the county Foxx oversees, Cook County, has seen a 27 percent fall in convictions and a 54 percent increase in dismissed cases.

Amid the crime surge, Chicago voters elected far-left “Defund the Police” candidate Brandon Johnson as mayor this month, who was the only candidate to not support filling the city’s 1,600 police officer vacancies.

Illinois ranks second in the nation in the number of residents leaving, with one resident leaving the state every 3 minutes and 43 seconds.
