Mike Waltz doesn’t rule out Ukraine minerals deal before Trump’s address to Congress

National security adviser Mike Waltz implied that there is a possibility that the United States and Ukraine sign a minerals deal before Tuesday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was slated to sign the deal Friday, but the tense meeting with President Donald Trump that day resulted in Zelensky leaving Washington empty-handed. Trump has said this agreement, which has yet to be made public, helps pay back the U.S. for its military aid to Ukraine.

Waltz appeared Monday on Fox News’s America’s Newsroom, the day before Trump will give his first speech to Congress of his second term. Ukraine sharing its reserves of titanium, lithium, beryllium, manganese, gallium, uranium, zirconium, graphite, apatite, fluorite, and nickel with the U.S. could bind the countries “together economically for a generation,” according to Waltz.

“We’re ready to enter into those negotiations,” Waltz said. “Is President Zelensky? And we’ll test both sides in terms of their willingness to compromise to get this deal done. We were planning to announce this minerals deal that it would have been signed Friday and was a very positive step forward for all sides. … We’ll see what happens in the next 48 hours, but we are certainly looking to move forward in a positive way.”

Following his meeting in Washington, Zelensky was met with backlash online for not thanking the U.S. for contributing financially to Ukraine’s war effort more than any other country. Then-President Joe Biden assured Ukraine another $425 million in aid in October 2024, bringing the total given by the U.S. to $59 billion. Zelensky took to X to offer his thanks.

“American people helped save our people,” Zelensky wrote. “Humans and human rights come first. We’re truly thankful. We want only strong relations with America, and I really hope we will have them.”

Almost 100,000 Russian soldiers have died in the war, according to a data analysis. Trump has suggested that 700,000 Ukrainian troops are also dead, but Zelensky said the number is 46,000.
