Walz tries to separate Harris from Biden in policy differences – Washington Examiner
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz was interviewed on the program *The View*, where he was asked about potential policy differences between a Harris-Walz ticket and President Joe Biden’s administration. During the discussion, co-host Sara Haines pointed out that a significant portion of Americans believes that a Harris-Walz ticket would bring about change. She inquired if Walz could identify any specific policy decision that he and Vice President Kamala Harris would approach differently from Biden.
Walz mentioned the expansion of Medicare, expressing a desire for it to have been proposed earlier. He acknowledged the challenges the Biden administration faced, particularly in recovering from the upheaval caused by the pandemic and addressing economic issues left by former President Donald Trump.
In a previous appearance on *The View*, Harris found it difficult to specify any policies she would handle differently from Biden, stating that “there is not a thing that comes to mind.” She emphasized that vice presidents traditionally avoid criticizing their presidents to maintain a productive relationship.
Walz then highlighted key issues that he and Harris aim to address, including affordability for child care and healthcare access for seniors, as well as supporting rural hospitals.
Walz tries to separate Harris from Biden in policy differences
Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) was asked what policy the Democratic presidential ticket would do differently from President Joe Biden during an appearance on The View.
“A third of Americans believe a Harris-Walz ticket would bring that change,” co-host Sara Haines said Monday.
“I would pose a similar question we asked Vice President Harris. Can you point to a policy decision over the last four years that you and the vice president would have handled differently from President Biden?” she asked.
“This expansion on Medicare is something that I wish would have been proposed sooner, but look, they’re tackling the issues that they needed to,” Walz responded. “They came out of a pandemic that Donald Trump had left a mess for, an economy and supply chains that were broken.”
Walz’s running mate, Vice President Kamala Harris, previously struggled during her appearance on the ABC News program while highlighting which policies she would do differently from President Joe Biden.
Harris had told The View on Oct. 8 that “there is not a thing that comes to mind” when asked whether she would’ve done anything differently from Biden. She reinforced this in her comments at a campaign rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Friday.
“To be very candid with you, including Mike Pence, vice presidents are not critical of their presidents. I think that really, actually, in terms of the tradition of it and also just going forward, it does not make for a productive and important relationship,” she told NBC News correspondent Peter Alexander.
Walz went on to tout the vice president’s matter of “affordability on child care” and “the ability of seniors to get healthcare.” He said they hope to protect “rural hospitals” and prevent “ambulance deserts in large parts of America.”
“I think she’s really leaning into these issues that impact people personally and then doubling down on whether it’s housing or child tax credit. Those are pretty big differences,” Walz said.
“She’s her own leader. She’s got her own path, own way forward,” he added.
When Biden ran in 2020, he also called for an expansion of Medicare by changing the age to 60. The Harris-Walz campaign has been proposing expanding Medicare to include in-home care.
Biden also previously touted that his Biden’s Build Back Better Act would help with childcare affordability through a series of proposed measures. Harris has also made childcare affordability a priority in her campaign.
