There’s a new “Lord of the Rings” movie on the docket for 2026, and this time it’s all about Gollum.
Warner Bros. announced that filmmaker Peter Jackson, who is responsible for the popular “LOTR” trilogy, “will be involved every step of the way,” per Variety. Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who co-wrote the screenplays of the LOTR trilogy with Jackson, will serve as producers on the upcoming film.
The studio confirmed in a press release that the new film’s working title is, “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.” Actor Andy Serkis will both star as Gollum and direct.
“For over two decades, moviegoers have embraced the ‘Lord of the Rings’ film trilogy because of the undeniable devotion Peter, Fran and Philippa have shown towards protecting the legacy of Tolkien’s works, and to ensure audiences could experience the incredible world he created in a way that honors his literary vision,” Warner Bros. studio leaders Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy said in a statement Thursday.
“We are honored they have agreed be our partners on these two new films. With Andy coming aboard to direct ‘Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,’ we continue an important commitment to excellence that is a true hallmark of how we all want to venture ahead and further contribute to the ‘Lord of the Rings’ cinematic history.”
Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens said, “It is an honor and a privilege to travel back to Middle-earth with our good friend and collaborator, Andy Serkis, who has unfinished business with that Stinker — Gollum! As life long fans of Professor Tolkien’s vast mythology, we are proud to be working with Mike De Luca, Pam Abdy and the entire team at Warner Bros. on another epic adventure!”

The original “LOTR” trilogy, which debuted in 2001, grossed more than $3 billion worldwide, the outlet noted. The movies are based on the novels by J.R.R. Tolkien.
Multiple movie spinoffs are currently in the works, including an animated film set 100 years before “The Hobbit” that has a scheduled December 14 release date.
