Warren is ‘very proud’ of Harvard pushing back against Trump – Washington Examiner

Senator Elizabeth Warren expressed strong support for Harvard University as it resists the Trump administration’s pressure regarding its diversity policies and how it addresses rising antisemitism on campus. Warren praised Harvard for standing firm against accusations from the White House, which has suggested that the university could lose its tax-exempt status for not responding adequately to these issues. She emphasized the importance of harvard’s research contributions, arguing that the administration’s attempts to cut funding are misguided. Furthermore, warren acknowledged concerns about how well Harvard protects the civil rights of its Jewish students and suggested that court action might be a better avenue for holding the university accountable than simply making public accusations. The senator also commented on her and Senator Ron Wyden’s legislative efforts to limit Trump’s authority to impose tariffs, highlighting a broader concern regarding trump’s influence over Republican senators.

Elizabeth Warren says she’s ‘very proud’ of Harvard pushing back against Trump

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) said she was “very proud” of Harvard University for opposing the Trump administration’s demands regarding the school’s diversity policies and its response to campus antisemitism, which have escalated in recent weeks between the Ivy League school and the White House.

The Trump administration has been warring with Harvard, accusing it of failing to crack down on antisemitic protests and, most recently, suggesting that the university could lose its tax-exempt status since having this status is “totally contingent” on acting in the public interest. Warren, however, said she is looking for “the offramp” in this conflict, saying that people are questioning why the White House is seeking to cut the school’s “research grants.”

“They weren’t given out politically, they were given out to people who were doing work that helps keep us all safer and healthier,” Warren said on CNBC. “We are not better and stronger because Donald Trump wakes up one day and decides he wants to cut that research. So, I think there’s — I’m actually very proud of Harvard to stand up and say, ‘We’re just, we’re not going to do this.’”

The Massachusetts senator was then pressed on how the university should be held accountable for not protecting the civil rights of its Jewish students and the “ample evidence” that the school’s faculty leans politically “progressive.” In response, Warren suggested going to court would rectify this, as gathering evidence and questioning it is better than “mouthing off” against a school.

“But you don’t just get to lip off and say, ‘And therefore the king gets to wave his magic wand and say, off with your head,’” Warren argued.

Warren also detailed how she and Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) have introduced legislation to roll back Trump’s ability to impose tariffs, saying that all Democratic senators are “ready to go” on this. For Republicans, meanwhile, some of them must ask whether they will “bend over” to whatever Trump wants.

On Thursday, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) expressed concern about retaliation from the Trump administration, adding that she is “very anxious” about using her voice.
