Washington Examiner: Southern Border Crisis an “Unmitigated Disaster” for Biden Administration
Investigative reporter Sarah Bedford from the Washington Examiner appeared on Fox News’s Fox News at Night to discuss the dire situation at the Southern border of the United States. According to Bedford, this issue is gaining recognition among more Americans, as it has become an “unmitigated disaster” for the Biden administration.
“There is a complete lack of focus and commitment to securing the border,” said Bedford. “It’s been an unmitigated disaster for the Biden administration. Even now, a majority of independents and Democrats agree.”
Bedford highlighted a report revealing that the Islamic State was exploiting a smuggling ring to bring its members into the United States through the Southern border. She also emphasized that the current resources allocated to border security are inadequate, allowing many individuals to enter illegally.
Public Opinion and Criticism
President Joe Biden has faced significant criticism for his administration’s handling of the migrant influx. A recent poll indicated that 48% of likely U.S. voters rated Biden poorly in terms of “handling issues related to immigration.” In contrast, only 33% of voters gave him a “good or excellent” rating on immigration.
Representative Chip Roy (R-TX) expressed his intention to hold Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas accountable, accusing him of lying about border security. Roy emphasized that he would provide funding to DHS but with conditions, urging Mayorkas to ”do your job.”
Border Patrol Statistics and Defense
U.S. Customs and Border Protection statistics for July revealed a 33% increase in arrests made by Border Patrol agents between ports of entry, with a total of 132,652 immigrants apprehended. The Biden administration officials at the DHS defended this increase, highlighting that it was 27% lower than the previous July.
Criticism of Biden’s Age
Aside from the border crisis, President Biden has also faced criticism regarding his age, as he is currently 80 years old and running for reelection in the 2024 presidential race. Bedford acknowledged a poll indicating that 69% of respondents believe he is too old for the role of president. She noted that this seems to be a unifying sentiment among Americans, regardless of their political affiliation.
