Crime in Washington, D.C.: A Growing Concern
Crime in Washington, D.C. has become a major issue, prompting a special session for lawmakers to address the rising crime rates. In an informal safety meeting held at the U.S. Capitol’s Longworth Building, attendees were briefed on how to protect themselves in the face of increasing criminal activity.
Hosted by Rep. Bryan Steil (R-Wis.), the chairman of the House Administration Committee, the meeting involved representatives from Capitol Police and the union for the District’s Metropolitan Police. Officers advised attendees to avoid wearing jewelry on public transportation and to keep phone calls brief while walking to minimize distractions.

According to data from the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia (MPD), violent crime rates have risen by 38 percent compared to the same period last year. Robbery, homicide, motor vehicle theft, theft, and property crime have all seen significant increases.
Lawmakers and government staffers have not been immune to these crimes. Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.) was assaulted in her apartment by a criminal with prior convictions, and a staffer for Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) was attacked by a recently released prisoner. Multiple staffers shared their own experiences of being mugged during the briefing.
“These are real men and women who work on Capitol Hill, who visit Capitol Hill, who are directly impacted by the rising crime that we’ve seen,” said Rep. Steil.
Democrat’s Soft Crime Policies
The increase in crime in Washington can be attributed to the Democratic push to ease laws against criminals. The Revised Criminal Code Act (RCC), which lessened penalties for violent crimes like carjacking and home burglaries, was passed by the D.C. Council. Despite being vetoed by Mayor Muriel Bowser, the Council overruled the veto.
The U.S. Senate approved a House-passed bill to overturn the RCC, with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) blaming the rise in crime on the left’s anti-police rhetoric. President Biden signed the bill into law, overriding the RCC.
“It shows you how disconnected the policymakers of the city of Washington, D.C., are from the reality on the ground,” remarked Rep. Steil.
Carjackings on the Rise
Carjacking has become a major issue in Washington, with an alarming number of incidents reported. The House Administration Committee GOP revealed that there have been 702 carjackings in the capital this year, averaging 20-25 stolen cars per day.
During the briefing, police advised drivers to leave space between their car and the vehicle in front of them at stoplights to have a better chance of escaping potential carjackers.
“It’s so concerning … to think in a city of just over 500,000 people that 5,000 cars have been stolen already this year,” expressed Rep. Steil.
The rise in crime in Washington has forced the Capitol police to divert their attention from guarding the Capitol to addressing street crimes.
“There’s no sign that this crime is slowing down. If you want to know what happens in our nation’s largest cities under complete Democratic control, look no further than your nation’s capital, crime is spiking,” concluded Rep. Steil.
What are some contributing factors to the rise in crime rates across cities in the United States?
Our city, who live in our neighborhoods. And they are scared. They are scared for their safety and the safety of their families,” said Rep. Steil during the meeting.
The rise in crime rates is not limited to Washington, D.C. alone. Cities across the United States are grappling with similar issues. From Los Angeles to New York City, crime rates have surged in recent years, leaving citizens concerned and demanding action from their elected officials.
According to a report by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), property crime rates, including burglary and theft, have increased by 8 percent nationally. Additionally, violent crime, such as murder and assault, has increased by 5 percent.
Several factors contribute to the rise in crime rates. Poverty, unemployment, drug addiction, and a divided society all play a role. The ongoing pandemic has further exacerbated these issues, leading to increased desperation and economic hardship for many individuals.
