A day after Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) refused to say whether Vice President Kamala Harris is the best running mate for President Joe Biden, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D., Md.) struggled to answer the same question.
“That’s President Biden’s choice and I think she’s an excellent running mate for President Biden,” Raskin told CNN’s Jake Tapper before an awkward throat clearing. “I don’t know what more needs to be said about that.”
When Jake Tapper later pressed him to give a yes or no on whether she’s the best choice, Raskin said, “I don’t know what else I can say other than she is an excellent running mate and an excellent vice president.”
Tapper noted that Raskin could say “yes.” But he never did throughout the segment, continuing to say she’s an “excellent choice.”
Raskin later took to Twitter to clean up his position.
“Vice President Harris is a historic and effective VP, and clearly the best match and running mate for President Biden,” he said.
The answer comes a day after Pelosi dodged the same topic.
When asked during a Wednesday appearance on CNN whether Harris is the best choice for veep, Pelosi said Biden “thinks so and that’s what matters.” When asked again, she said, “She’s the vice president of the United States.”
Pelosi added that the nature of the job is that ”you don’t do that much.”
Pelosi, who announced earlier this week that she is seeking reelection next year when she will be 84 years old, further hyped Harris up as “politically astute” and avoided criticizing her.
Politico reported this year that Democratic officials won’t criticize Harris out of fear of being called racist or sexist.
