President Biden emphasized the need for investment by the richest 20 countries in the world to support infrastructure development in poorer nations. He argued that addressing climate change is not only crucial for the environment but also more terrifying than a global war.
“If global warming exceeds 1.5 degrees in the next 10 to 20 years, it would be even more frightening than a global war,” President Biden stated. He expressed concern about the irreversible consequences of such a scenario, saying, “There’s no way back from that.”
The president highlighted the importance of preserving forests, which act as ”carbon sinks” by absorbing carbon dioxide emissions from the atmosphere. He warned against repeating the mistakes of the past, such as deforestation, which would eliminate these vital carbon sinks.
President Biden proposed that the G7 and wealthy G20 nations should invest in infrastructure development in areas like the Congo to help less-developed countries benefit and protect their natural resources.
While some viewers found President Biden’s speech engaging, others criticized his alarmist approach to climate change. On social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter), users debated whether climate change or other issues, such as nuclear holocaust or white supremacy, should be considered the most frightening threat.
