Biden shares personal kitchen fire story to comfort Maui wildfire victims.
President Biden Empathizes with Hawaii Wildfire Survivors
President Joe Biden expressed his understanding of the pain of losing a home during a meeting with survivors of the devastating Hawaii wildfires. He shared a personal anecdote about a small fire that broke out in his kitchen back in 2004, stating, “I don’t want to compare difficulties, but Jill and I have a little sense of what it’s like to lose a home.”
Biden addressed the group in Maui, where the death toll has reached at least 115, with nearly 1,000 people still missing. Surprisingly, Biden’s FEMA chief failed to provide an explanation for the missing individuals this week.
Reflecting on the incident in his own life, Biden recounted, “Years ago now, 15 years ago, I was in Washington doing Meet the Press. It was a sunny Sunday when lightning struck our home near a small lake, not on a lake, but a big pond.”
The President mentioned that firefighters bravely confronted the flames, and he narrowly escaped losing his wife, his ’67 Corvette, and his cat. However, the Delaware fire department, which responded to the 2004 fire, stated last year that the incident was insignificant and contained within 20 minutes. They did not report encountering any fire beyond the kitchen.
In an effort to connect with the survivors, Biden also brought up the tragic death of his first wife and daughter in 1972.
During their visit to the devastated state, President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden spent six hours surveying the damage from the air. The President emphasized that his administration would show respect for the sacred grounds and traditions affected by the wildfires.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas further emphasized the administration’s commitment to cultural sensitivity in their response to the crisis.
Last week, Biden faced criticism for initially brushing off questions about the wildfires and for his perceived lack of leadership during the disaster. After addressing the situation two weeks ago, the President remained silent for four days before commenting on it again.
