Washington State Pays Drag Queens and Transgender Activists to Teach Government Employees
Washington state recently made headlines for using taxpayer funds to pay a group of drag queens and transgender activists to teach government employees about “fighting for trans liberation.” The Daily Wire obtained public records and video footage of the event, shedding light on this controversial use of funds.
The event, titled ”Drag Story Hour and Fireside Chat,” featured activists from Drag Story Hour and the Trans Formations Project. Drag Story Hour is known for hosting events where men in drag read to children at libraries and schools, while the Trans Formations Project fights against what they consider “anti-trans” legislation, including bills aimed at protecting children from irreversible medical interventions related to gender identity.
According to a contract obtained by The Daily Wire, Drag Story Hour was paid $5,000 to participate in the event, which was part of the Washington State Office of Financial Management’s “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Empowerment Conference.”
The presentation focused on political activism, community organizing, and the role of “allies” in the fight for trans liberation. Ace Sutherland, a board member for the Trans Formations Project, emphasized the importance of direct engagement with those directly impacted by these issues. Sutherland stated, “We know what we want, and we don’t need anyone speaking over us or for us. We have a voice for ourselves and we will direct you on how to best advocate on our behalf.”

Johnathan Hamilt, the Executive Director of Drag Story Hour, shared specific ways that attendees could support their organization through activism. Hamilt recounted an incident where demonstrators protested a drag story hour event, highlighting the need for “cis white” people to act as a barrier between the performers and potential threats.

Sutherland also urged state employees to engage in conversations about “trans liberation” with their friends and family, suggesting that those who don’t embrace radical gender ideas may not be true friends.

Alex Petrovina, the Founder and Executive Director of the Trans Formations Project, used the taxpayer-funded forum to ask Washington state employees to donate to their nonprofit organization. Petrovina emphasized the need for sustainable funding to continue their work towards trans justice.

Petrovina also encouraged state employees to recognize their influence and use it to support the transgender movement, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity in policy-making.

According to Johnathan Hamilt, this was the first collaboration between Drag Story Hour and Washington State, and they received positive feedback from the event. The Trans Formations Project did not provide a comment on the matter.
