WATCH: Head writer of Selena Gomez’s Disney show wanted character to be bisexual

A former executive producer of the formerly popular children’s show, “Wizards of Waverly Place” on Disney Channel, expressed that he wished to introduce an openly bisexual character portrayed by Selena Gomez.

Peter Murrieta, who served as the head writer on the show, revealed the idea on a recent appearance on “Wizards of Waverly Pod” hosted by Jennifer Stone and David DeLuise, former actors on the show. He played with the notion that there was an obvious and intriguing relationship between Stevie, played by Hayley Kiyoko, and Gomez’s character, Alex Russo. The writer revealed that he wished he could have further explored the possibility of making Alex Russo an open bisexual character.

However, he clarified that it was not feasible to explore such a storyline at the time. Stone, who portrayed “Harper Finkle,” agreed with Murrieta, stating that it would have been fun to explore the teenage character’s bisexuality if they had the opportunity.

Murrieta regretted that the concept was not explored since the show was on air from 2007-2012, during a period where the idea of introducing an openly bisexual character in a children’s show was not yet a common practice.

DeLuise chimed in, suggesting that today’s generation would be more accepting of this concept and even pointed out that Disney Channel is currently introducing LGBT characters into their new shows.

However, representatives of Disney Channel have yet to comment on the matter.
