Harris, who is a self-proclaimed “space nerd” and head of the National Space Council, chatted briefly with Kjell Lindgren, Bob Hines, and Jessica Watkins before the signal was lost.

“We have fallen out of range of our tracking and data relay satellite system,” a NASA employee announced as the call was disconnected after just a few moments.

While there, she chaired her second meeting of the National Space Council.

“Today, as was the case 60 years ago, our nation’s leadership in space is critical to our economic prosperity, to our scientific and technological progress, and, in a time of increasing great power rivalry, to our national security,” Harris said.

Harris also spoke about the Artemis 1 launch, which has twice been scrubbed due to needed repairs.

“The Artemis program will establish the first space station in lunar orbit and the first lunar base camp, where astronauts will train for the first mission to Mars,” Harris said.

NASA is hoping to attempt another Artemis 1 launch in late September.
