WATCH LIVE: House votes on Speaker Mike Johnson

The House is set to vote on reelecting House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to the leadership post.

While President-elect Donald Trump has endorsed Johnson, the speaker’s political future in the position appeared uncertain after several House Republicans suggested he would not have their support come Jan. 3.

A speaker needs a majority of votes cast, and House Republicans are expected to have 219 seats. Depending on how many members are present to vote, Johnson can likely lose no more than one vote, and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) is already a hard “no” vote on the matter.

At the start of the 118th Congress two years ago, it took House Republicans 15 votes to elect former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Johnson has insisted he can retain the post with one vote.
