WATCH: Man driving stolen police car jumps out at 70 mph, smacks head, and gets back up
A man was involved in a high-speed chase outside Los Angeles while driving a stolen police car. The suspect opened the driver-side door while the car was traveling at a speed close to 70 mph, jumped out of the vehicle, and smacked his head on the asphalt, causing him to slide several yards before coming to a stop. Fox 11 was live tracking the speed chase in its helicopter and caught the incident on camera. The car, with no one at the helm, kept going and crashed into a light pole eventually.
The video shows the speedometer at about 50 mph when the man jumps out of the vehicle, while Fox 11 reported that the car was actually traveling at about 70 mph. The suspect jumped after a spike strip destroyed one of the cruiser’s rear tires. Clearly injured, the suspect managed to stand up and start running away from approaching officers before he was eventually apprehended.
The suspect, who has not yet been named, was involved in a two-car crash prior to the chase, and when troopers arrived at the scene, he managed to jump in the patrol car and drove off. Troopers noted the presence of several assault-style weapons in the vehicle, but the suspect did not access them. According to Fox 11, he later died from his injuries at the hospital.
The incident happened at about noon on Tuesday, and the chase began with the police cruiser headed eastbound on the 138 Freeway in the Antelope Valley.
