WATCH: Stanford student tells Congress college administrators ‘destroy’ free speech
AStanford University student told lawmakers on Wednesday that students at his school are too afraid to speak their minds because they fear retaliation from school administrators who foster an environment of censorship .
Students at Stanford University are” scared to speak up ,” according to Josiah Joner, executive director of the Stanford Review, who told legislators during a House Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Development hearing that college administrators may fight against them.
In response to Rep. Bob Good’s question, Joner said,” These incidents that we’ve seen across the country are destroying because in the classroom because individuals are too scared to speak up, and they know that if they say anything, the university administration will arrive after them.”
Days prior to the hearing, a group of college activists yelled down U.S. Fifth Circuit Court Judge Kyle Duncan and interrupted his Stanford Law School lesson. Dean of Stanford Law School Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Tirien Steinbach, who has since been put on administrative leave, joined the activists.

According to Joner, the majority of college students do not understand freedom of speech during arrangement, and Stanford students are never given any courses or seminars on it. He continued by saying that educators may take the initiative in educating students about free conversation.
To fully preserve these principles and show that we’re not going to be in this period where a speech is shouted down, the college apologizes, and now months or years later the same thing… happens repeatedly, Joner said. We need college officials who stand up for[ freedom of speech ] once and for all and thoroughly because that only serves to fuel the cycle that is destroying it in this community.
