WATCH: Tesla Owner Blows Up Car After $22K Repair Quote
A Tesla owner in Finland chose to blow up his car after receiving a quote for around 20,000 Euros (approximately $22,600) to repair it.
“When I bought that Tesla, the first 1,500km [932 miles] were nice. Then, error codes hit,” Tuomas Katainen said in a video on YouTube.

The video claimed Katainen used 30 kilograms (approximately 66 pounds) of dynamite in the epic explosion of his 2013 Tesla Model S. The detonation was filmed in a quarry reportedly in Jaala, Finland.
Katainen claimed he was told the only way to repair the vehicle was to replace the entire battery pack. The car originally sold for a retail price of $57,400.
Tesla vehicles generally include an eight-year warranty, though Katainen’s apparently had expired. The predicament led to Katainen’s fiery plan, as Gizmodo reported:
To carry out his master plan, Katainen enlisted the help of YouTuber Pommijätkät, which roughly translates to “Bomb Dudes,” according to Google Translate. (Whether that’s an accurate translation or not, it seems appropriate considering Pommijätkät likes to make things explode).
While blowing up a car with dynamite may sound fun, it’s not an easy task. Katainen and Pommijätkät set up the operation in a quarry at Jaala, a small rural town in Southern Finland. The group had to consider factors like the explosive’s huge pressure wave and the direction the blast would go in order to ensure safety.
The YouTube video has already been viewed more than 4.7 million times.
“There’s nothing left. Absolutely nothing,” Kaitain said. “I never enjoyed this much with the Tesla! And also, maybe I am the first person in the world who has exploded a Tesla. So maybe, made some history.”
An Electrek report by Fred Lambert noted the experience is not common to Tesla drivers.
“That’s a lot of money, but the good news is that Tesla’s battery packs have been known to last a long time,” Lambert said.
“I have a Tesla Model X that had a battery pack last for more than 300,000 miles,” he added.
On average, the 2013 Tesla model battery was estimated to last at least 150,000 miles.
“For context, these cars come with an eight-year (or up to 150,000 miles) battery and drive unit warranty, but the warranties on older models are starting to expire, revealing the potential cost behind a full battery replacement,” the Verge reported.
Despite the Tesla explosion, CEO Elon Musk has been making plenty of other news in 2021. Musk was named Time magazine’s “Person of the Year” for 2021 earlier in December.
