Whoopi Goldberg Says Young People No Longer Protest: ‘We Haven’t Taught Them to Stand for Anything

Recently, there’s been a⁤ surge of anti-Israel protests on college campuses‍ in the US, affecting various campus activities and events, including graduation ceremonies. Amidst this backdrop, Whoopi Goldberg, ‌co-host of “The ⁤View,”⁢ commented during a broadcast that the younger generation⁣ seems untaught about protesting for causes. This was discussed within the context of a conversation about former President ⁣Barack Obama, whose daughters⁣ have shown disinterest in pursuing political careers. Goldberg seemed to imply that the toxic nature of contemporary politics might be deterring young people from entering the field. Her co-hosts, ⁢including Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin, also shared their thoughts, with Hostin highlighting the particular concern that black mothers might have about their children entering politics.

Just weeks after anti-Israel protests rocked college campuses across the country — closing off buildings, canceling classes and exams, and even disrupting graduation ceremonies — “The View” host Whoopi Goldberg claimed on Wednesday that no one was teaching the younger generation to protest for things.

Goldberg made the comments during Wednesday’s broadcast of the ABC midday talk show, during a conversation about former President Barack Obama — and the fact that his two daughters, raised in the White House, have expressed no interest in getting into politics.

“So, as funny as that is, it’s also really sad. Does that mean that politics have gotten so nasty that young people don’t want to go into it?” Goldberg asked.

Joy Behar expressed her disappointment, complaining that she would prefer to have Obama back — and Sunny Hostin agreed, but she said she understood why the Obamas might not want their daughters to follow their father into politics.

“A lot of black mothers, especially, would be nervous about their children getting into politics because of the racial bias that still exists in this country. The societal bias, the structural racism that still exists in this country,” she claimed, adding, “But you know, we need less influencers and more leaders. We do. We need fresh blood.”

She went on to say that young people needed to be more worried about standing on “the right side of history” than they were in building a brand on social media, prompting a response from Goldberg.

“I think we have not taught them how to do that. We haven’t —” Goldberg began. “I have to tell you; we have not taught young people how to stand for stuff. They’re learning. But this is not something — we were forced to do it because our brothers or sisters or uncles and cousins were thrown into wars. They were thrown into stuff.  Women wanted the opportunity to go to school. There were things we were fighting for.”

“I think a lot of the problem is because people keep saying — where are the grown-ups? Talking about us. And I say, we’ve done this. We’ve been doing it. We’re waiting for y’all to come,” she added.
