Landry emphasized the need for prompt action to support the victims’ families and enhance national security, particularly with the upcoming Super Bowl in New Orleans. He highlighted the critical importance of having Noem confirmed promptly following President Donald trump’s inauguration on January 20.
‘We need’ Kristi Noem confirmed for DHS secretary on Jan. 20: Jeff Landry
Gov. Jeff Landry (R-LA) is the latest in a growing number of Republican lawmakers calling for President-elect Donald Trump’s national security team to be confirmed in an expedited manner, specifically stating “we need” Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD) confirmed as the new secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
Landry’s call comes after a New Year’s terrorist attack in New Orleans, Louisiana, that killed over a dozen people and injured another 35. In the days since the attack, Landry cited how it is important to “support the families” of the victims amid the investigation, with his focus being to “protect the homeland.”
As such, he has stressed that Noem needs to be confirmed right after Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20, citing how New Orleans is preparing to host the annual Super Bowl game next month.
Noem was nominated by Trump for the DHS secretary role about a week after he won the 2024 election, and her confirmation is “something that the Senate could do” right after Trump is back in the Oval Office.
“Look, Chuck Schumer knows about terror. He is from New York; he knows how important it is to have a homeland security secretary in place,” Landry explained on Fox News’s Sunday Night in America with Trey Gowdy. “We don’t need any gaps, and what I’m doing at this time is calling on the Senate Democrats to aid the Senate Republicans and ensure that on the 20th, after Donald Trump is sworn in, that she becomes confirmed. We need that!”
In the wake of the terrorist attack, Landry issued a call to “crush” terrorism, stating that “we allow” the war on it to never end. He also cited how the terrorist attack on New Year’s Day struck at an “unprecedented time.”
Ahead of the confirmation process for Trump’s Cabinet nominees, Rep. Dusty Johnson (R-SD) expressed enthusiasm for Noem’s confirmation, stating she would be “great” in the position. He referenced how Noem “understands the problem at the border” as she visited the southern border during the Biden presidency.
Beyond hosting the Super Bowl this year, New Orleans just finished hosting the annual Sugar Bowl game Thursday, which Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill expressed hesitancy to host the day after the attack. However, Landry pushed not to allow fear to “paralyze us” and opted to attend the game himself.
President Joe Biden will visit the city of New Orleans on Monday and will be accompanied by his wife, first lady Jill Biden.
