We Passed A Parent’s Bill Of Rights In Florida — Parents Across The Country Deserve The Same

Parents across the United States must be aware of the deliberate efforts by K-12 education institutions to erect barriers between themselves and their children under the justification of “safety.” Public school educators and administrators must not be allowed to sideline parents as the primary figures in raising children.

Unfortunately, there is a concerted effort to minimize parental rights when it comes to child-rearing. In Florida, for example, school district administrators released “gender diverse guidelines” in 2018 stipulating that a child’s name, pronoun, and facility usage were exclusively up to the student, ignoring the parent’s role. These guidelines even went so far as to state that parents would only be included in decisions about their child’s gender preference on a case-by-case basis.

This was the tipping point for me as a school board chair, and I knew that something needed to be done. I helped create the Florida Parental Rights in Education Act, which reinforces parents’ fundamental rights to knowledge about their children’s education and prevents educators and boards from hiding essential information.

I have seen a significant difference in transparency in Florida schools since the laws’ implementation. All parents in every state need the same fundamental rights to know what schools are teaching their children, and I applaud the efforts to codify parental rights nationwide. Proponents of the Parents Bill of Rights argue that these laws are necessary due to revelations that schools across the U.S. are withholding or hiding information about students from their parents.

The Biden administration is currently proposing changes to Title IX that would strip away parental rights further. Still, we must remember that no one loves a child more than their parents, and we must protect our role as the primary influence in their lives.
