Biden highlights gun safety law, promises assault weapon ban.
President Biden’s Bold Actions for Gun Safety
President Joe Biden delivered an impassioned speech at a gun safety summit in West Hartford, Connecticut, where he celebrated the success of the gun safety legislation he signed into law last year. According to Biden, this legislation has already made a significant impact by preventing firearms from falling into the wrong hands and ultimately saving lives.
During the National Safer Communities Summit at the University of Hartford, Biden made a powerful promise to take further actions to address the issue of gun violence. His plans include banning assault weapons, ending immunity for gun makers, and implementing comprehensive background checks.
“We will beat the gun industry. We will beat the big money that’s just behind them and the politicians who refuse to stand up and act,” Biden declared.
Today marks the one-year anniversary of the signing of the Safer Communities Act into law. This legislation expanded background checks for gun purchasers aged 18 to 21 and allocated additional funds for mental health and school security, among other crucial provisions.
While commending the Safer Communities Act as “the most meaningful gun safety law in 30 years,” President Biden emphasized that there is still much work to be done.
“A year ago, the conventional wisdom was we would never get any Republicans to support gun legislation. Period. That was the conventional wisdom,” Biden recalled. “We did overcome an unrelenting opposition from the gun lobby, gun manufacturers, and many politicians who hide behind the belief that they’ll never have to pay a price for their inaction.”
It is worth noting that the Safer Communities Act received bipartisan support, with all Democrats and a significant number of Republicans in both the House and the Senate backing the measure.
President Biden acknowledged this bipartisan effort as “an important first step” in his speech, but he remains determined to push for further progress.
