Wes Moore uses DeSantis’s Disney dispute to divert Baltimore criticism.

Gov. Wes Moore Defends Baltimore Against Criticism, Takes a Swipe at Gov. Ron DeSantis

During a recent interview on MSNBC’s Inside with Jen Psaki, Gov. Wes Moore (D-MD) passionately defended the city of Baltimore, Maryland, against criticism from Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL). Moore cleverly invoked DeSantis’s ongoing feud with Disney to make his point.

“I think he should come spend some time in Baltimore. Frankly, he needs to worry about the fact he’s got some of the large employers suing him. For him to use us as a punchline, or to use us as a talking point, it continues to show that we have these so-called leaders, who do not have a plan,” Moore said.

DeSantis is currently facing a lawsuit brought by Disney in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida. The lawsuit alleges that DeSantis and other Sunshine State officials have been using government power against Disney in retaliation for expressing a political viewpoint unpopular with certain State officials.

The feud between DeSantis and the company arose when Disney denounced the Parental Rights in Education Act, which DeSantis signed last year. This led to Disney’s central Florida district being restructured, after having full autonomy since its creation in 1967.

Not one to back down, DeSantis took a jab at Baltimore and Chicago while defending Florida from an NAACP travel advisory on Fox News Channel’s Fox News Tonight.

“You go to Baltimore, Chicago; some of these kids are more likely to get shot than to actually have a high-quality education. I don’t hear the NAACP talking about that. So, we’re proud of what we have been able to do. And, oh, by the way, Trey, quarter one of 2023, Florida set yet another tourism record,” DeSantis said.

However, the most recent data from the Baltimore City Public Schools paints a concerning picture. Only 5% of students are proficient in High School Math, and just 34% are proficient in High School English Language Arts.

Despite the ongoing feud, Gov. Wes Moore remains committed to improving Baltimore’s situation. He was elected as governor of the Old Line State last November, winning an impressive 88% of the vote in Baltimore City.
