What Could Happen if You Eat Mold Accidentally?

Mold is composed of microscopic fungi and grows easily in high-moisture foods such as fruits, vegetables, and bread. It can also grow on any type of food, and sometimes the fuzzy spores that indicate mold growth can be invisible to the naked eye, and the mold can take root deeper inside the food. Accidentally ingesting mold can be unpleasant, and symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps are likely to occur. However, there are some molds that produce mycotoxins, which are harmful when consumed, and can cause allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening.

Avoiding visibly moldy or foul-smelling food is essential for preventing mold-related illnesses. Although it’s tempting not to waste food, any food with mold on it should be thrown away, as mold can spread quickly into non-visible portions of the food item. It is advisable to contact a doctor immediately if you think you have eaten contaminated food. By keeping perishable foods in the refrigerator or freezer as soon as possible after purchasing, cleaning and drying produce items thoroughly, and using airtight containers to keep moisture away from food, you can help prevent mold growth and reduce your chances of developing mold-related illnesses.
