Shapiro criticizes Disney exec’s woke Star Wars agenda
Ben Shapiro Slams Disney’s “Woke Universe of Nonsense” in Star Wars Franchise
Daily Wire Editor Emeritus Ben Shapiro blasted the direction the Star Wars franchise is headed under Disney’s Kathleen Kennedy with the announcement of the next movie’s new woman director, calling it another entry in Disney’s “woke universe of nonsense.”
“I’m a huge Star Wars fan of the original series and even the prequel series, which has grown on me over time, especially in comparison to the garbage that has been churned out by Disney,” he commented, acknowledging, “Disney has done a couple of things that are right, like the stuff that Dave Filoni (the exec producer of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels) is doing over there. That’s good stuff. Star Wars: Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels is stuff my kids typically like.”
“But Kathleen Kennedy has just destroyed the series,” he charged. “Star Wars is one of the great IPRs in all of human history, tens of billions of dollars worth of IP. And they’ve now decided to turn over the universe to a person named Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. So who exactly is this person?”
“She’s mostly famous for having made a couple of nonfiction documentaries that won Oscars about feminism and anti-feminism in Pakistan, which is fine, but what does that have to do with Star Wars?” he asked. Noting that Obaid-Chinoy was one of the directors of Miss Marvel, the 2022 series from Disney, he pointed out, “No one watched … no one wanted to watch and no one cared.”
“They’ve decided to put her in charge of the next Star Wars movie, which will focus in on Rey,” he noted. “You remember Rey? Or maybe you don’t. She is the star of the last Star Wars trilogy in which they killed off all the characters you love in favor of characters that no one gave any hoots about whatsoever. No one has said the name Poe Dameron in years because no one cares. No one cares about Finn, and barely anyone cares about Rey.”
“So they got rid of all your old favorites or they killed off on uselessly and stupidly. And then they killed off Luke uselessly and stupidly,” he continued. “And then they killed off Leia uselessly and stupidly. And then they added … characters like Rose, an awful character who annoyed everyone so much that they literally wrote her out of the third movie, ‘The Rise of Skywalker.’”
He suggested handing the movie series to Filoni, saying, “Dave Filoni actually likes the series. Dave Filoni actually likes the characters. Dave Filoni actually understands what he’s doing in the Star Wars universe and what the universe is all about.”
“Instead, Kathleen Kennedy has hired this documentary filmmaker about the women in Pakistan. Also, she was the first artist to co-chair the World Economic Forum in 2017,” he stated.
Obaid-Chinoy had stated, “You know, I’m very thrilled about the project because I think what we are about to create is something very special. And we are in 2024 now, and I think it’s about time that we had a woman come forward to shape the story in a galaxy far, far away.”
“You had a woman who shaped all the stories in the galaxy far, far away. Her name is Kathleen Kennedy, and she sucks. She’s awful,” Shapiro declared. “In any fair universe, she would have been fired.”
“We don’t need a woman waiting to be saved by a man,” Shapiro said, saying that for the Disney execs, “Equity is the only thing that matters. Equity, equity, equity. We need a woman directing. How about you just make a good Star Wars film? What do you guys do for a living?”
“The answer is they please themselves,” Shapiro stated. “They please themselves on the stakeholder dime. That’s what they do because they like stakeholder capitalism. The World Economic Forum preaches it, after all … everyone in the world can be changed by entertainment.”
“That’s why you hire directors who have no history of directing anything good in this sphere and then decide that the way that you’re going to do this is by putting them in charge of the single most lucrative IP in probably all of human history,” he said.
“So slow clap for Kathleen Kennedy. She’s done it once again,” he concluded.
How has Dave Filoni proven his ability to expand the Star Wars universe through successful animated series?
Has proven that he knows what he’s doing when it comes to expanding the Star Wars universe. He has created successful animated series that have garnered a loyal following, and his storytelling abilities have been praised by fans and critics alike. It only makes sense to give someone like Filoni the opportunity to helm a Star Wars movie and steer it back in the right direction.”
Shapiro also criticized the direction in which Disney has taken the Star Wars franchise under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy. He believes that Kennedy’s decisions have negatively impacted the series and have ultimately led to its decline in quality. He argues that Star Wars is a valuable intellectual property that has generated billions of dollars and has a massive fan base. Therefore, it is crucial to entrust its future to someone who understands and respects its legacy.
The appointment of Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy as the director of the upcoming Star Wars movie was a source of concern for Shapiro. He questions her qualifications and relevance to the Star Wars universe, pointing out that her previous work primarily focuses on nonfiction documentaries about feminism and anti-feminism in Pakistan. While Shapiro acknowledges her talent and success in that particular field, he fails to see the connection between her work and the Star Wars franchise.
Furthermore, Shapiro criticizes the recent trilogy, highlighting the lack of interest and investment in the new characters, especially Rey. He argues that Disney eliminated beloved characters from the original series and replaced them with characters that failed to resonate with the audience. Additionally, he mentions the introduction of characters like Rose, who were poorly received and quickly written out of the storyline due to fans’ dislike.
To rectify the situation, Shapiro believes that Dave Filoni should be entrusted with the future of the Star Wars franchise. He praises Filoni’s work on animated series such as Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, acknowledging that they are well-received by both children and adults. Shapiro argues that Filoni’s success and understanding of the Star Wars universe make him the ideal candidate to restore the franchise to its former glory.
In conclusion, Ben Shapiro criticizes Disney’s approach to the Star Wars franchise, particularly under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy. He expresses concern over the decision to appoint Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy as the director of the next Star Wars movie, citing her lack of connection to the series. Shapiro also highlights the decline in quality and interest in the recent Star Wars trilogy, advocating for Dave Filoni to take charge of the franchise and restore it to its former greatness.
