Lessons from Oxford
Visiting Oxford University: A Glimpse into the Troubled West
On Monday night, I had the incredible opportunity to visit Oxford University in Great Britain. Let me tell you, it was an experience like no other.
Now, I have to admit, my wife was a bit hesitant about me traveling to the U.K. given the safety concerns. After all, just a few days ago, there was a massive march in support of Hamas, and anti-Semitic hate crimes have been skyrocketing in London. But we both agreed that it was important to go to Oxford, especially in these uncertain times when the West seems unsure of its moral compass.
And let me tell you, Oxford did not disappoint. The university itself is a breathtaking monument to human greatness. The architecture, the history, it all speaks volumes about the intellectual legacy of the West. But beneath the surface, there is a troubling reality.
The Troubling Reality at Oxford
As I delved deeper into the institution, I discovered that it has been infiltrated by individuals who openly support Islamic terrorism. Yes, you heard that right. Radicalized Muslim students, right at the heart of one of the most prestigious Western institutions, have no qualms about calling for the destruction of the State of Israel.
During my visit, I witnessed student after student justifying the heinous acts committed by Hamas, claiming that it was somehow morally equivalent to the actions of the Israeli Defense Forces. But when pressed further, they revealed their true intentions: the complete annihilation of Israel.
Epic exchange between Ben Shapiro and an anti-Israel activist at Oxford University today. This “highly educated” student doesn’t know basic history.

Needless to say, it was a discomfiting experience. To stand face to face with individuals who openly call for the extermination of Jews, people who are my friends and family, is emotionally challenging, to say the least. And what’s even more disturbing is the lack of pushback and the tolerance shown towards such blatant Jew-hatred.
The West’s Shaky Ground
This is why I firmly believe that the West is in trouble. History has shown us that when institutions like Oxford falter, it is a clear sign that the West is on shaky ground. Back in 1933, the Oxford Union Society infamously voted against fighting for its own country, sending a message of weakness to the enemies of the West.
Today, we see a similar pattern emerging. The West seems hesitant to defend its values in the face of a radical form of Islam that seeks the destruction of its enemies. And while the international community and legacy media lament the suffering of civilians in Gaza, they conveniently ignore the fact that Hamas is responsible for their plight.
It is Hamas, not Israel, that has embezzled billions of dollars in aid meant for the people of Gaza. It is Hamas, not Israel, that prioritizes building tunnels over bomb shelters for its own fighters. And yet, the world expects Israel to bear the burden of providing humanitarian aid while Hamas continues its reign of terror.
This is sheer cynicism. No other country would be expected to endure such circumstances. It is time for the international community to demand that Hamas surrenders and puts an end to this conflict. Anyone who fails to do so cannot claim to care about human life, whether Israeli or Palestinian.
The West is at a crossroads, and it’s up to us to stand firm in defense of our values. The fate of Oxford, and indeed the entire Western world, hangs in the balance.

In light of the presence of radical ideologies at Oxford, how can we recommit ourselves to the values of intellectual pursuit, critical thinking, and respect for diverse perspectives in order to confront and overcome these challenges
The very institution that is meant to promote learning, critical thinking, and intellectual pursuit has become a breeding ground for dangerous ideologies. It is deeply troubling to see such hatred and support for terrorism being openly expressed within the walls of Oxford University.
I couldn’t help but wonder how this came to be. How did an institution that is supposed to uphold the values of tolerance, inclusivity, and respect for diverse perspectives allow such radicalized individuals to flourish? Is this a reflection of the larger culture and society we find ourselves in today?
As I continued my exploration of Oxford, I also encountered a prevailing sense of political correctness that stifles open dialogue and debate. Any attempt to challenge the prevailing narrative is met with hostility and accusations of bigotry. It seemed as though freedom of speech and expression were being sacrificed in the name of protecting people’s feelings.
This oppressive atmosphere is not unique to Oxford University but is instead indicative of a wider problem in the West. The fear of causing offense has led to a dangerous self-censorship, where anyone who dares to voice dissenting opinions is immediately labeled as racist, sexist, or Islamophobic. The result is a society that is unable to engage in honest conversations about important issues, stifling intellectual growth and progress.
The presence of radical ideologies at Oxford is a stark reminder of the challenges we face in the West. It is a wake-up call for us to reevaluate our commitment to the principles that define us. We must be willing to confront and challenge dangerous ideas, to engage in open and honest debates, and to defend the values that have shaped our societies.
But it is not all doom and gloom. Despite the troubling reality that exists at Oxford, there are still many individuals who continue to uphold the values of intellectual pursuit, rationality, and critical thinking. It is essential that we support and encourage these individuals, for they are the ones who will lead us out of these troubled times.
Visiting Oxford University was, undoubtedly, an eye-opening experience. It allowed me to witness firsthand the challenges we face in the West, but it also filled me with hope. It reminded me that even in the face of adversity, the pursuit of knowledge, understanding, and truth still has the power to overcome hatred and intolerance.
As we navigate the troubled waters of the West, we must remember the importance of education and the role it plays in shaping our societies. It is through institutions like Oxford University that we can instill a sense of critical thinking and foster an environment that encourages dialogue, tolerance, and respect.
Visiting Oxford was not just an opportunity to glimpse into the troubled West but also a call to action. We must confront the challenges we face head-on, recommit ourselves to the values that have defined us, and work towards a future where intellectual pursuit and respect for diverse perspectives can thrive once again.
