What is the timeline of the day?
The 20th Amendment specifies that the term of each elected president begins at noon on Jan. 20 of the year following the election. Each president-elect takes the oath of office before assuming the duties of the position.
The timeline for these events usually starts at 6 a.m. with security screening. Musical performances will begin around 9:30 a.m., and opening remarks for the swearing-in ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m.
At 12:01 pm on Jan. 20, Trump will become President of the United States again.
The traditional inaugural luncheon will follow the swearing-in ceremony.
During former President Jimmy Carter’s inauguration, he started the tradition of walking down Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House for an inaugural parade. Trump is expected to do the same. The parade will start at the U.S. Capitol, and proceed up Pennsylvania Avenue NW toward the White House. The Presidential Inaugural Committee will have some tickets available for bleacher seats, but the parade is mostly free to watch from the sidewalk.

• Westbound I-395 Exit 4A & 4B toward Maine Avenue, SW / 12th Street, NW, all traffic sent toward I-395 South / Richmond
• 3rd Street Tunnel / Southbound I-395 entrance at 4th Street and New York Avenue, NE
• 3rd Street Tunnel / Southbound I-395 entrance at 4th Street & Massachusetts Avenue, NE
• Westbound I-395 Exit 5A toward 7th Street, SW & 5B toward 6th Street, SW
The bus routes 3F, 3Y, 11Y, 16E, 16Y, 38B, 31, 32, 33, 36, 42, 43, 52, 54, 59, 64, 70, 74, 79, 80, 96, D4, D6, D8, G8, L2, N6, P6, S2, S9, X2, X8, X9 will all be detoured.
Metro has not announced which train stations will be closed due to the inauguration. In 2017, Metro closed five stations. In 2021, however, due to heightened concerns after Trump supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, Metro closed 13 stations. At that time, L’Enfant Plaza was the only station that remained open within easy walking distance of the Mall.
The Smithsonian additionally announced its D.C. museums will be closed on Jan. 20.
