What we know about Devon Archer, former business partner of Hunter Biden.
Hunter Biden’s Former Business Partner to Testify Before House Oversight Committee
Devon Archer, a former business partner of Hunter Biden and a board member of Burisma, is set to testify behind closed doors on Monday before the GOP-led House Oversight Committee. The committee is currently investigating President Joe Biden’s family and their business dealings.
Controversy Surrounding Archer’s Testimony
Over the weekend, controversy erupted when the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York requested a trial judge to determine a date for Archer to report to prison. This request was related to an unrelated fraud conviction. The timing of this request has raised eyebrows and prompted House Republicans to call for their colleagues to return to Washington, D.C., despite Congress being in recess.
“The DOJ is now actively committing the crime of obstructing a congressional investigation,” tweeted Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL). “If Devon Archer isn’t in the witness chair Monday, we better haul every SOB at the DOJ before Congress EVERY DAY to make them pay for this.”
House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) also expressed his concerns about the timing of the Department of Justice’s request during a Fox News appearance on Sunday.
Archer’s Evading Tactics
Archer has previously canceled scheduled depositions with the committee on three occasions. The committee issued a subpoena for his testimony last month, with a deadline of June 16, which he failed to meet.
The committee is eager to hear from Archer as they believe he possesses information relevant to their investigation. His proximity to Hunter Biden and the rest of the Biden family, particularly their business dealings, makes his testimony crucial.
Archer’s Role and Potential Implications
Archer served alongside Hunter Biden on the board of Burisma, the Ukrainian energy company that has been at the center of allegations of influence peddling. He also worked with Hunter Biden on various other business ventures through their investment firm, Rosemont Seneca.
Given his close association with Hunter Biden, Archer’s testimony has the highest potential to implicate the president and his family members. The committee hopes that his insights will shed light on the allegations of influence peddling.
Archer’s Introduction of Hunter to Burisma
Interestingly, it was Archer who recruited Hunter Biden for the Burisma position, which raised concerns about a conflict of interest for then-Vice President Joe Biden. This recruitment is one of the key focal points of the House Republican investigation into alleged influence peddling by Biden.
It is worth noting that another business associate of Hunter Biden, Chris Heinz, declined an invitation to join Burisma. Heinz, the stepson of John Kerry, expressed strong opposition to working with Burisma, stating that it was unacceptable. Heinz and Archer had differing views on pursuing the opportunity, with Archer and Hunter Biden deciding to proceed individually rather than as part of their firm.
