White House evades press inquiries amidst mounting Biden investigations.
The White House Remains Silent as Legal Troubles Mount for President Biden
The White House has been noticeably quiet in the face of mounting legal challenges for President Joe Biden. For over two weeks, reporters have been left with unanswered questions as the president enjoys his vacation and travels across the country.
In early August, Biden took a break at his family home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, before briefly returning to Washington, D.C. During his time back in the capital, the president attended a public event honoring the 2022 World Series champions, the Houston Astros. However, the White House did not hold a briefing before Biden left for Arizona.
Inflation Complicates Biden’s Path Back to the White House
Throughout the week, Biden traveled to New Mexico and Utah, only returning to Washington, D.C. on Thursday evening. Yet again, the White House chose not to hold a briefing on Friday.
The last official briefing with White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre took place on July 27, just before Biden’s trip to Maine. Since then, Jean-Pierre has only held two brief gaggles aboard Air Force One, one on the flight to Maine and the other on the flight to Arizona.
While it’s not uncommon for a president to take vacations and travel during the summer months, the absence of a briefing on the same day Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the elevation of David Weiss to special counsel overseeing federal investigations into Hunter Biden’s tax and business affairs is raising eyebrows.
“If Joe Biden never discussed business with his son, and he is mentally fit enough to serve as President, and he truly believes his policies are helping America — why won’t he take questions from reporters? Because all three of those statements from the Biden White House are lies and they know it. Contrary to the Trump White House, where the American people watched Donald Trump take questions from the press and speak directly to them every single day. Liars hide. Honest people fight for the truth.” – Karoline Leavitt, MAGA Inc. spokeswoman
It’s worth noting that former President Donald Trump’s third White House press secretary, Stephanie Grisham, went nearly a year without holding a press briefing during her tenure.
The White House declined to comment on Weiss’s elevation to special counsel, but President Biden himself dismissed a question about recent congressional testimony from Devon Archer, a former business associate of Hunter Biden, during his visit to New Mexico.
“I never talked business,” the president responded. “I knew you’d have a lousy question.”
Attorney General Garland announced the decision to elevate Weiss after his request for restructuring. Weiss had been the lead prosecutor in Hunter Biden’s tax and firearms case. The president’s son had previously entered into a plea agreement, but it was thrown out in July due to disagreements over future immunity. The younger Biden is still under investigation, potentially for violations of the Foreign Agent Registration Act.
Meanwhile, President Biden is also facing legal issues related to mishandling classified documents. He turned over numerous documents to the Justice Department that had been improperly stored at his homes and offices. Some of these documents date back to his time in the Obama administration and even his long career in the Senate.
Garland has appointed Robert Hur as special counsel to oversee this investigation. Hur and Biden’s legal team are reportedly discussing terms for an in-person interview in the near future.
As the legal troubles continue to mount, the White House’s silence on these matters raises further questions and speculation.
