White House blames stress for Biden’s dog’s biting spree.
President Biden’s Relationship with the Truth
President Joe Biden’s relationship with the truth is, at best, tenuous. This last week has been another eye-opener.
With endless reports on Hunter Biden’s business dealings, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Tuesday said, “I’ve been asked this question a million times. The answer is not going to change. The answer remains the same: The President was never in business with his son. I just don’t have anything else to add.”
Well, that’s a far cry from what Biden said in 2019. “I’ve never spoken to my son about his overseas business dealings,” Biden told reporters on the campaign trail while accusing then-President Donald Trump of attacking him as a diversion.
Biting Dog, Commander
Then there’s Biden’s biting dog, Commander. Reports from the Department of Homeland Security indicate that there have been numerous instances where Commander has nipped at officers, with one incident reportedly resulting in a hospital visit for an injured Secret Service agent. It seems that Commander, the purebred German Shepherd, is making a name for himself in the biting department.
Conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch recently obtained around 200 pages of Secret Service records through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit. The group took legal action after the agency failed to adequately respond to their request for information about Commander’s biting incidents. It’s clear that curiosity surrounding these incidents is not going away any time soon.
A reporter on Tuesday asked Biden’s spokesman about the issue.
“On a very different topic: the dog. It seems that Commander Biden has a bit of a biting problem. Can you give us the latest? And also, any plans for him to, perhaps, make a move, go stay with some family friends, as — as Major Biden, the previous dog, did?” the reporter asked.
Jean-Pierre went into a spin cycle, the official jean-pierre-45/” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>transcript shows.
So, as — (laughter) — as you all know, the White House complex can be unique and very stressful. And that is something I’m sure — (laughter) — you all can understand. And — and it is — as I just said, is — it is unique and it is stressful for all of us, so you can imagine what it’s like for a family pet and family pets, more — more broadly.
And so, look, the First Family is working through ways to make this situation better for everyone. I think there was a statement that came out of the First Lady’s Office from my colleague over there, Elizabeth Alexander, so I’ll just kind of lay out a little bit of what she put out in her statement.
So, they have been partnering with the Secret Service and Executive Residence staff on additional leashing protocols and training, as well as establishing designated areas for Commander to run and exercise.
According to the Secret Service, each incident referenced was treated similarly to comparable — comparable, pardon me, workplace injuries with relevant notifications of reporting procedures followed.
And so, the President and the First Lady are obviously — and continue to be incredibly grateful to the Secret Service and the Executive Residence staff for all they do to keep them and their family and the country safe.
I don’t have anything — specifics on any changes to — to Commander’s whereabouts. So I’ll just leave it there.
Both the White House and the Secret Service have downplayed the situation, with First Lady Jill Biden’s communications director acknowledging the unique challenges that family pets face in the White House complex. The Biden family is reportedly working to address the issue and improve the situation for everyone involved.

Commander, who was gifted to President Biden by his brother James in December 2021, after the rehoming of the president’s previous dog, Major, has certainly had his fair share of biting incidents. Major, also a German Shepherd, made headlines for his own biting incidents involving Secret Service officers and White House staff.
One notable incident occurred on November 3, 2022, when Commander bit a uniformed officer not once, but twice, resulting in injuries to the officer’s upper right arm and thigh. The officer received medical treatment from the White House medical unit and was subsequently taken to a hospital. Fortunately, Commander’s vaccinations were up to date, as confirmed by an email from a captain of the Uniform Division.
