White House blasts passage of McCarthy debt bill, saying it will hurt people
White House Criticizes Republican Debt Bill
The White House has slammed the debt bill passed by Republicans in the House, claiming it will harm vulnerable people. The Republican debt ceiling proposal, called the Limit, Save, Grow Act, was put forward by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and passed in a 217-215 vote. However, all Democrats and four Republicans voted against the bill, making it unlikely to pass in the Senate. Despite this, some Republicans hope it will encourage President Joe Biden to negotiate.
Biden Administration Unreceptive to Proposal
White House Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre released a statement criticizing the proposal, stating that it cuts veterans’ healthcare, education, Meals on Wheels, and public safety, takes away healthcare from millions of Americans, and sends manufacturing jobs overseas. She urged Republicans to act immediately to ensure the US doesn’t default on its debts, quoting former President Ronald Reagan to support her point.
McCarthy praised the bill, portraying it as a victory for Republicans and the US. However, the White House has made it clear that the bill has no chance of becoming law, and President Biden will not force middle-class and working families to bear the burden of tax cuts for the wealthiest.
