White House denounces anti-Jewish hate after Jayapal controversy.
The White House Condemns “Anti-Jewish Hate” Amidst Controversy
The White House has issued a strong response to recent comments made by a progressive lawmaker, aiming to address the growing controversy surrounding the issue of “anti-Jewish hate”.
Over the weekend, Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) sparked a heated debate by labeling Israel as “a racist state” during a conference. In light of this, the Biden administration initially welcomed her apology on Monday, but took further action on Tuesday.
“When it comes to antisemitism, the entire Biden-Harris administration has been clear that when Israel is singled out because of anti-Jewish hate, that is unacceptable,” emphasized press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre in response to a reporter’s question. “We’ve been clear on speaking against antisemitism.”
Although Jean-Pierre did not directly mention Jayapal or her comments, she built upon the remarks made the previous day by National Security Council coordinator John Kirby.
“An apology was the right thing to do for those comments,” he stated. ”Our commitment to Israel is ironclad. We’re going to make that clear and consistent every chance we get.”
During the press briefing, President Joe Biden was engaged in a meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, underscoring the significance of the issue at hand.
Jayapal, in response to protesters who disrupted the conference where she was speaking, initially asserted that “we have been fighting to make it clear that Israel is a racist state”. However, she promptly apologized within hours, clarifying that she does not believe Israel as a nation is inherently racist.
